<image:title>Blog - PROPOSAL ACCEPTED: Wells Art Contemporary 2025 - May 2025 (11 years later)</image:title>
<image:caption>Recently, I had started to paint again and as a consequence, an accumulation of leftover remnants of canvas and linen became components of making once more. The renewed version of wound objects began as a slow build. It happened when I had a lull in the studio and my mind happened to direct itself in that direction. There was no particular objective, no end result and no thoughts of whether this was to become a work of worth. It was only when I took what I had at the time to a critique session, with a box lying around in the studio, that I began to believe it could be taken seriously as a piece of work. The inclination from the group was it was complete as it was shown, contained within the lip of the upturned box. The box was a contingent component to the reading of the work and if it continued beyond the perimeter it would read as something else. And I agree… but then an opportunity to apply to the Wells Art Contemporary took the work on a journey beyond the box.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - INSTALLATION PROPOSAL: Wells Art Contemporary 2025 - Mock up for Proposal</image:title>
<image:caption>In response to the theme ‘Flowing Light’ the proposed installation associates itself with concepts of gathering and seeking truth in its capacity to form. Created from leftover studio remnants, use is restored to discarded material through a process of spiralling and enclosing in paint. The work is an accumulation of objects and alludes to a multitude of architectural spires. To spire, is to breathe in Latin and to inspire is to breathe life into. Giving light to material once left in the dark, a gathering of forms emerge to come together to create one work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - INSTALLATION PROPOSAL: Wells Art Contemporary 2025 - Chapter House Steps (left hand side)</image:title>
<image:caption>I have chosen the Chapter House steps (left hand side) as a space for the proposed work because I am interested in the nature of steps in reference to repeated platforms which act as stage sets. Addressing notions of hierarchy with ascending and descending characteristics, each step is a supporting structure for the components of the work to unfold into. The proposed installation is in progress, and is expanding as a series of small objects which bring life to disused and discarded material. Useful once again, the objects become parts of a narrative. For this space it is the intention to make around 600 objects which will be distributed over the 12 steps. Playing with pattern and rhythm the Chapter House steps would act as a space for the work to unfold and to emerge, creating 12 scenarios within the form as a whole.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Consideration towards the colour of the stone may affect colour outcomes of the work (currently painted white) by lightly dipping the base of each object in an earthy tone such as tea or oil. This would relate to concepts of anointing which adheres to my interest in ceremonial activities explored in past works.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - rESIDENCY: Raglan, NZ - Te Toto Gorge</image:title>
<image:caption>As my focus on the basalt stones increased, I began to take an interest in where the stones came from and how they shaped the landscape after the volcanic eruption 2.5 million years ago. Te Toto Gorge, a geographical scar that extends from the now extinct volcano to the sea, emerged as a place of interest. It was formed when a side flank of the volcano collapsed, exposing balsaltic lava embedded in the cliffs and revealed clear geological characteristics, unique to Mt Karioi.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - ESSAY: Field Works - Fig 8. Agnes Dean, The Tree, 1964, oil and pencil on canvas</image:title>
<image:caption>Agnes Dean expresses how the grid provides tranquility and rest (Glimcher, 2012:104). She says, ‘Everything I paint is the same; there are no comparisons because each one is measured… each one is perfect’ (Glimcher, 2012:71). But Dean’s work is filled with imperfections. ‘The grid’s mythic power is that it makes us able to think we are dealing with materialism (or sometimes science, or logic) while at the same time it provides us with a release into belief (or illusion, or fiction)’. This is the power of the grid, where logical straight lines perpendicular to each other release the work to depict illusion and imperfection, and transcendence of knowledge for the work to exist in. (Krauss, 1979).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - ESSAY: Field Works - Fig 9. Ana Mendieta, Untitled: Silueta Series</image:title>
<image:caption>The works of Ana Mendieta were critical for the development of ideas. Embedding her body into the landscape, she would ‘push herself into the ground until she left her mark’. Experiencing separation from her home as a child, Mendieta craved a deeper connection with the world. Her close relationship with the earths surface resonated with the Field Works series and actions of digging. It identified with originating concepts which led the work to seek a close connection to place (Gottesman, 2017). Breaking Ground explores a sense of becoming through processes that reflect particular characteristics of the heath. The people of the commons, identified with shaping the heathland, once cut its turf for fuel. Rather than ‘stripping the turves off the sand by the thousands’ they carefully took out every third turf in a row, and staggered the rows to create a chequer board effect. This maintained their resource (Howkins, 1997:23).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - ESSAY: Field Works - Fig 15. Our Day at Alton in Jane Austen’s House</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Day at Alton (2022) is a stop-motion film from photographs repetitively taken every 6 steps for the duration of the 30 minute walk. Capturing the walk in the direction of the journey, the work is subjected to what is in front and present. Not beholden to this perspective, it observes a time when Jane occupied this ground but also alluded to a future where neither she nor the work are present. Counterbalancing this forward motion, the film eventually snaps backwards towards its place of origin. Moving in reverse through image and sound it begins again from the door of Jane Austen’s house, on a loop, the end of the journey remains unattainable.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - REFLECTION: Print Making and Drawing - Print making, making as multiple</image:title>
<image:caption>In my practice, screen printing explores the notion of the photograph transported into another medium. A photograph of an empty field, which in essence is a series of pixilations accumulated to represent a real place, shifts further into an arrangement of half tones. This breaks the view into a pattern of positive and negative tones that describe the landscape in a binary format. Flattening the depth of perception and uniforming shades between dark and light, create a code that indicate form but do not assume reality.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The allocated site travels in a narrow strip alongside the length of a sandy path. From a gate at the top of a hill, permitted access stretches to at least 500 meters long and roughly 4-5 meters wide. Previous drawings and research worked in a grid format and considered a more open square space. Therefore, adjustments to the new dimensions needed to be made.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘Every third turf in a row was taken out and rows were staggered to create a chequer board effect. Each of the turves where cut separately rather than cutting a long thin strip and chopping it into sections. This left sandy patches surrounded by turf and therefore less exposed to erosion and the heather soon grew back and was ready for cutting again in six or seven years’.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - PROJECT PROPOSAL: Concept of Current work - Screen prints ready for traces to be applied</image:title>
<image:caption>The work will also explore the media of screen printing as a means to shift the photographic image of empty fields into a format that investigates traditional processes of making. The print will be the backdrop which provides a space for mark making. Traces of found nails will consider placement and pattern within a dialogue between intention and chance. Defiling an otherwise perceived empty landscape, the work seeks to define notions of emptiness and acts of looking from both a human and non-human point of view.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Theories that inform this investigation come from texts such as Phantasmagoria where Marina Warner explores how phantasms, myths, ghosts and spirits continue to fuel the imagination. She writes about historical and contemporary procedures used to transmit life from beyond known domains and describes the ways evolving technologies have fuelled the imagination. “Through ten different vehicles—from wax to film—her book attempts to handle materials through which spirit and spirits have paradoxically taken form in the world…” (2006:12).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Untitled #1 ( ) (2021), is a carefully staged operation. The increased quality and precision of the objects in the photographs were key to creating an illusion and establishing a difference between the concept and the real. Like the waxworks Warner refers to in Phantasmagoria, whose origins began with the death mask, the photographs capture the stilled moment and make for an inert, blank, and unspeaking likeness (2006:24). Context is intentionally erased, depriving the viewer of any clues to their origin. They present an illusory likeness, a phantasm from another time and place, and could be interpreted as hyperreal.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Preparatory drawings set out to develop strategic plans and established the dimensions of the space. Like a game of Tiddlywinks, a small object was flicked across the drawing, plotting reference points that were subsequently highlighted by a coloured dot. Finishing on 65 points, the plan was directly relocated to the wall. The game became the map, which in turn provided the instructions for the work. Resonating with notions of rules and rhythm, the work was able to become more in the world, rather than of the hand. In the way a grid maps a physical space, the game maps the choices of action within the grid. But rather than depicting reality, it too produces the copy, a duplication.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A curatorial project titled Hyperreality established a key development in the work where reflection progressed more specifically to the investigation between truth and illusion. Theories of Phantasmagoria had introduced concepts of animation and phantasms, but Hyperreality took the research further into a jumbled world where truths were no longer real and the simulation or the copy is in fact the truth. It was the opportunity to expose concerns in the practice that sought to categorise, summarise and sterilise the found objects. Baudrillard writes, “the logical evolution of science is to distance itself increasingly from its object, until it dispenses with it entirely. Its autonomy is only renewed even more fantastic …” (1994:7).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Untitled #5 ( ) (2021) represented a freeze-framed moment during the process of documenting objects for Untitled #1 ( ). Captured at a moment in time, the work explored the notion of the object as a model without origin, a hyperreal (Baudrillard, 1994:1). With stage, lights and camera set, the act of preservation is depicted in accentuated focus.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Seeking to make amends for this duplicity, Untitled #5 ( ) introduced a living, evolving component. Danh Võ demonstrated pairings between gardening and sculpture in his show, Chixculub in the White Cube in 2020. This was significant to the practice in considering the inclusion of plants as subject matter. Inspired by his juxtaposition of artefacts and nasturtium plants like offerings to the viewer (Võ & Silwka, 2020), Untitled #5 ( ) presents a pot of nasturtiums at the foot of the work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The plant sits alone, underneath, like an after thought. Directional lights connect the display to the living nasturtium, but the work has yet to resolve the aims and intent behind the addition. Further research and evaluation is required to establish the necessity for the plant and the pot. It does, however, introduce soil and plant life to the practice as a visual phenomenon and provides the platform for the next phase of development. Rather than indirectly through the unseen activity of working the land, soil, as a substance, begins to take a greater role in the work.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - RESEARCH APPRAISAL: A Field Study of Leftover Matter - Fig. 22 Documenting nasturtiums</image:title>
<image:caption>The concluding project is an ongoing work that will continue into the next phase of the practice. It seeks to bring some of the building blocks from experimental observation throughout the year into a single coherent form. Photography, moving image, sound, gathered data and the processes of editing are emerging slowly together in a stop motion, digital film. A continual documentation of one field that records the changing seasons, daily weather and the progression of growth from one stand point, establishes a dialogue with the landscape. A record of daily images of a growing nasturtium refers back to Danh Võ’s influence. Lily Carr from Feral Atlas suggests “plants are in a different time reality and move slower which hinders our ability to notice them”. Considered intelligent, Uriel Orlows, raises the issue that people do not “feel empathy with a life form that is not in our likeness” (ZKM 2021). As an area in the practice only lightly touched on, there is much still to discover about what is meant by the intelligence of inanimate objects and plant life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - RESEARCH APPRAISAL: A Field Study of Leftover Matter - Fig. 23 Samuel Beckets script ‘Breath’</image:title>
<image:caption>The work introduces one last area of research. Samuel Beckett’s play Breath focuses on an amplified recording of breathing. Given minimal script instruction, he sets a scene of scattered litter, a slow increase and decrease of light and a faint brief cry. Among these visual and audio instructions are moments of hold, of silence given 5-10 second time frames (1969). These few descriptive instructions and specific time restraints set the scene, while still providing room for interpretation and creativity. Beckets script reinforces a belief and inclination towards restraint. Work that includes intervals and space allude to rhythms that replicate, for example, the rhythm of breath, the beat of the heart and the dawning of each new day. It supports the aims of the work to animate rather than to suppress and to imagine sequences of events that come alive in the telling.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As the group curated the show a decision was made (probably be me) to remove the lights from ‘Untitled #5’. In order to keep in line with the quietness of the works as a whole, it seemed appropriate. In the space, the works were hung and placed on one wall, relating directly to each other, as if one work. Later questions were made to the appropriateness of these decisions. Would it have been an improved outcome to space the work, to allow each work to occupy a wall each? Was removing the lights appropriate, did something become lost as a result of this decision?</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - ARTIST TAKEOVER: DAY 6 - DAY 6 [am]</image:title>
<image:caption>In the dead of winter, in the middle of a pandemic, I watched nasturtiums grow… I was inspired by Danh Vo’s show ‘Chicxulub’ at the White Cube. He had a room of historical fragments and live plants that appeared to me to be about a relationship between the two. One spoke of the past, the other of the future. In an attempt to experiment further with the idea of bringing life to my collection of fragments, I began a series of daily recordings of Nasturtiums growing from seed. The fragments came from my garden and I was curious to experiment with notions of returning the collection somehow to the idea of growth and life. At this stage I am building a series of recordings, there are no signs of life yet, but I am hopeful…</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - ARTIST TAKEOVER: DAY 6 - DAY 6 [pm]</image:title>
<image:caption>In the last 12 days there are signs of life at last… the objective now is to combine this off shoot of growth and find ways to bring this emerging life into a form of union with the inanimate fragments and objects. There is a hint of spring and hope in the air on Day 6 of my artist takeover. Tomorrow will be my last day and although by no means do I have a conclusion to the unfolding of the story, I have found the activity of this week a very rewarding task. I attended a talk on Thursday called ‘Terrestrial University: Every Plant Has a Story (to tell) as part of the Critical Zones exhibition hosted by @zkmkarlruhe. What came up was that even though plants do not move, neither do they vegetate, they ‘live, strive, perceive, communicate and: tell stories’.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The landscape is never short of the signs of garbage. It is the ghost that haunts presence, the mucky hand print left behind. I have been reading a book called ‘On Garbage’ by John Scanlan and I am amazed by how interesting the topic of garbage can be. The book describes waste as leftover matter that is the result of a separation of the desirable from the unwanted, the valuable from the invaluable, and the worthy from the worthless. But is one person’s garbage another person’s treasure.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My practice focuses on the search for knowledge through inquiry into aspects of place and nature and explore the role of activity as a means to connect more closely with landscape. My aim is to create a space for the senses to be still and engage, to notice and take care of the fragile place in which all forms of life rely on.</image:caption>

<image:caption>‘There was a wall. It did not look important. It was built of uncut rocks roughly mortared. An adult could look right over it, and even a child could climb it. [It served as] a line - an idea of boundary. But the idea was real. It was important. For seven generations there had been nothing in the world more important than that wall. Like all walls it was ambiguous, two-faced. What was inside it and what was outside it depended upon which side of it you were on.’ (Ursula K. <image:caption>Digging the soil exposes an abundance of discarded and forgotten objects. More often broken, they speak of human activity within place and time. The Leftover Matter Series reveals a collection of things left behind and aims to examine concepts of reuse and growth? It seeks to animate and recreate their story, questioning preconceived ideas of what is considered unwanted.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artwork - LEFTOVER MATTER SERIES - Untitled #1 (air) 2021, 65 digital inkjet prints on gloss photo paper and brass pins, 132 x 200 cm</image:title>
<image:caption>Behind the scenes the trickery begins. One object after another is subjected to extreme focus as their image is retained and recorded in photographs. One object per photograph, they shift towards a state of hyperreality. The work is displayed on the wall and pinned along the top edge of each photograph with tacks. Following a pattern with pencil drawn directly onto the wall, traces are left demonstrating the process of installation and emphasising the concept of becoming. Gaps between images appear in the work and refer to absence and intervals. Suggesting spaces between places of encounter, patterns of difference between positive and negative, found and not found create room to breath within the grid. The electric fan is not included in this adaption of Untitled #1 ( ) as the work directs greater focus on the trickery and illusion within the processes of photography.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artwork - LEFTOVER MATTER SERIES - Untitled #5 (hyperreality) 2021, ceramic, plastic, wooden box, metal, terracotta, soil, plants, artificial light, dimensions; 156 x 95 x 82 cm</image:title>
<image:caption>’…by dying, the object takes its revenge for being “discovered” and with its death defies the science that wants to grasp it’ - (Baudrillard, 1994:7) Over-lit and raised, the discarded and fragmented objects are subjected to extreme focus. In reference to the hyperreal, the discovered objects simulate the appearance of being real. Becoming objective, the work highlights the paradox that by being observed, the objects no longer hold true. Held in a state of preservation, its reality is lost and is no longer itself but a simulacrum. Staged beneath, the plant and soil represent the underworld from where the objects came from, and to where they will return in defiance of knowledge.</image:caption>

<image:title>Artwork - WOODLAND SERIES #1: Works on Paper - Bachelard describes the daydream as being a philosophical category of immensity. It contemplates ‘grandeur’, and transports the dreamer outside the immediate world to a world that bears the marks of infinity. This series of drawings focuses on a contingent transference of trace. Each one hopes to create an outcome that alludes to the vastness of the encounter with a landscape that has no edges nor horizon. Losing oneself in the map-like marks of line and shadow, the work aspires to conjure a memory of ‘something else’.</image:title>
