Making Sense #2 (2025) Acrylic on canvas and linen, dimensions variable
In response to the theme of ‘Flowing Light’ in relation to Wells Cathedral, Making Sense #2 associates itself with concepts of gathering and seeking truth in its capacity to form. Created from leftover studio remnants, use is restored to discarded material through an activity of rotating and spiralling, then enclosing in paint. The work is an accumulation of objects and alludes to a multitude of architectural spires, neither one the same nor different. To spire, is to breathe in Latin and to inspire is to breathe life into. Giving light to material once left in the dark, a gathering of forms emerge to come together to create one work.
Making Sense #2 presents itself on the Chapter House steps, shifting the work further toward concepts of hierarchy. The repeated platforms of each step act as stage sets and address notions of an ascending and descending system of levels. Characters, chapters and narrative are integral to the final placement of the objects as pattern and rhythm create reason and make sense of the work. Each step is a supporting structure for the components of the work to unfold into.
